Doc Rivers expresses hope for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks after stepping down

Another chapter has ended for Doc Rivers after he stepped down as coach of the Milwaukee Bucks just a few minutes after they lost in their season finale on Monday.

The Bucks fell to the Philadelphia 76ers, 126-06, at Xfinity Mobile Arena, finishing their lowly campaign with a 32-50 record, including 13-28 on the road.

There have been reports that the 64-year-old Rivers would be given an advisory role on the Bucks, but it remains unclear if he will accept the job. He has stated that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

What is clear, however, is that Rivers has no ill will towards the organization and Giannis Antetokounmpo. In a postgame interview, the one-time Coach of the Year said he wishes nothing but the best for Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee.

“I just want to see it end well for him, I really do, and for the franchise. I think they both deserve it. We can’t lose the fact that Giannis and this franchise won a title together. To me, that should never be lost, no matter how this ends up,” said Rivers.

“Giannis is a fantastic person. I’ve been lucky to coach a lot of stars, and he’s right at the top as far as just good people, and I want good people to be taken care of.”

Antetokounmpo also had nothing but positive words for Rivers, who spent three seasons in Milwaukee, describing him as an “incredible coach” and an “NBA legend.”

The Bucks missed the playoffs for only the third time since they drafted Antetokounmpo as the 15th overall pick.

With Rivers’ departure, Antetokounmpo’s tenure in Milwaukee could be next on the agenda for the front office. The Bucks are reportedly open to hearing trade offers again for the two-time MVP this summer.
