Discarded Pakistan player refuses to meet King Charles at Clarence House

One of the Pakistan players dropped from the touring squad refused to attend a meeting with King Charles at Clarence House on September 2, 2026, reportedly in protest at his treatment by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Four other axed players did attend the audience, joining captain Babar Azam, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and several other members of the touring party.

Despite being cut from the squad, a group of the discarded players were instructed to present themselves at Clarence House alongside the retained players and management. One declined to do so.

The four dropped players who attended were Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Khurram Shahzad and Muhammad Awais Zafar. The identity of the fifth player who chose not to go has not been publicly confirmed. The decision by one player to stay away underlines the depth of discontent within the touring party following the PCB's sweeping changes after the back-to-back defeats.

Naqvi described the meeting as positive and cordial, and confirmed that King Charles praised Pakistan's efforts towards peace during the audience.

The visit came amid considerable off-field turbulence for the touring side. Head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed had been sacked following the defeats at Lord's and Headingley, with New Zealander Mike Hesson brought in to take charge of the remainder of the series. The Clarence House audience therefore served as a rare moment of collective appearance for a squad that had been significantly disrupted in both personnel and management.
