DeWayne Brown II makes big decision on Tennessee future

The college basketball transfer portal is already in full swing immediately after Michigan’s win in the national championship game against UConn. But while much of the news is focused on who is entering the transfer portal, there’s also players who decide to stay such as Tennessee Vols forward DeWayne Brown II.

It was announced on Tuesday that DeWayne Brown would bypass the transfer portal and remain at Tennessee, as per Joe Tipton of On3, giving the Vols a key returner in the frontcourt for the 2026-27 season.

Brown was a key player at times during his freshman season as Tennessee reached the Elite Eight before falling to eventual national champion Michigan. In that game, Brown finished with six points, two rebounds and one assist in 12 minutes of play. That was his March Madness high in playing time. He shot 3-of-5 from the field.

Brown appeared in a total of 35 games, including 10 starts, at a little over 14 minutes per game. He averaged 4.8 points and 3.6 rebounds with splits of 58.6 percent shooting from the field and 66 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

His return is important for the Vols as they have already lost six players to the transfer portal in Bishop Boswell, Clarence Massamba, Troy Henderson, Cade Phillips, JP Estrella and Jaylen Carey. That’s already with the expected loss of probable first-round NBA Draft pick Nate Ament.

This past season was Rick Barnes’ 11th year at the helm as Tennessee head coach. During that time, he’s led the Vols to eight NCAA Tournament appearances including five Sweet 16s and three Elite Eight appearances.
