Daniel Jones’ shocking contract demand as NFL free agent actually makes sense

Daniel Jones knows the Indianapolis Colts need him much more than he needs them, which has led to a wild contract ask. Jones reportedly turned down a three-year, $100M offer from Indianapolis, which would have paid him almost identically to the contract Sam Darnold signed with the Seahawks a year ago. That offer made sense with the shared DNA of breakout performances after being freed from bad New York-based teams — but Jones said no.

Instead Jones’ camp asked the Colts for a deal in the range of $50M per year, according to Albert Breer of SI. This would have been more money than Patrick Mahomes or Matthew Stafford make — and would have paid Jones the 13th highest QB salary in the NFL. Keep in mind that Jones is also coming off a season-ending injury, after the quarterback suffered a torn achilles in Week 14 of 2025, with there being a small amount of risk that he might not come back as the same player he was before.

Regardless, Jones has all the leverage in this situation after he was hit with the transition tag last week. His agents are also aware of the situation the Colts organization finds itself in. This was a team that was desperately needing to put up or shut up with GM Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen. In many ways Jones saved both of their jobs, but stepping into the starting role and making the Colts one of the hottest teams in the NFL before his injury and the team’s late-season collapse as a result.

Moreover, there’s an inescapable reality to the quarterback position in the league: The cheapest time to sign a quarterback is right now. It is never going to become less expensive to reach an agreement with passers. The idea of a bargain is dead, unless there’s some sort of massive recession in team salary cap room. Rather, we’re going to see the cap keep increasing, quarterbacks make more money, and if you’re confident in a quarterback then it just makes sense to sign them now, rather than wait and be pressured into a position where you’ll need to spend more.

Daniel Jones is on track to be a legendary NFL bag securer for someone who was viewed as a middling QB at best prior to the 2025 season. Jones that the Colts don’t have any other options at quarterback, and there isn’t really anything in the pipeline for them — so they have to make a deal. The pitch from his camp will be “if he is the guy, then $50M a year will be a steal based on the next few years,“ it will just be about the Colts weighing that decision.
