Spurs’ Devin Vassell delivers confident message amid 2-0 NBA Finals deficit

The San Antonio Spurs are down 2-0 against the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. With both of the first two games being in San Antonio, that early deficit isn’t something many fans would have predicted. The Knicks have come out hungry in an attempt to win their first championship since 1973, though.

Even with the early disappointment, the Spurs seemingly still have plenty of confidence, and a comeback is far from off the table. Devin Vassell, in particular, believes in the Spurs’ chances. The 3-and-D wing gave San Antonio a vote of confidence ahead of Game 3.

“[We are] just taking it one game at a time,” Vassell said. “We are trusting in our work, trusting in each other, trusting in our teammates, trusting the coaching staff. I mean, we are here for a reason. The series could be 2-0 for us with a couple of different possessions, so [we are] just going to trust what we’ve been doing and clean up some things, and we’ll be good.”

Both Game 1 and Game 2 were within reach for the Spurs. The team lost Game 1 by a score of 105-95, but Victor Wembanyama played well, and Dylan Harper showed that he is ready for the big moments despite his status as a rookie. Game 2 was there for the taking, too, but an untimely turnover in the clutch by Wembanyama, which was followed by a missed game-winner opportunity, resulted in a one-point loss. Crunch time struggles are a rarity for San Antonio’s best player, though.

Five teams in NBA Finals history have erased a 2-0 deficit to become champions, but none of them did it when those first two losses came at home. Vassell would certainly play a huge part in a potential comeback.
