Cubs place pitcher on IL, DFA outfielder
The Chicago Cubs made multiple roster moves on Friday, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Reliever Phil Maton was placed on the injured list among the roster moves.
“Cubs relieve Phil Maton placed on the IL with right knee tendinitis. And Dylan Carlson was DFA’d for Seiya Suzuki’s (knee) return. Ethan Roberts called up for Maton,” Rogers reported.
Maton, a 33-year-old right-handed pitcher, is currently in his first season with the Cubs. His first five appearances of the 2026 campaign were far from ideal, as he recorded a 13.50 ERA during that span. Still, he is a veteran reliever who could make an impact once he returns from his injury.
Carlson was once a promising young outfielder. After finishing third in National League Rookie of the Year voting with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2021, Carlson has been unable to find consistent success. Now 27 years old, the outfielder failed to record a hit in four plate appearances with Chicago in 2026.
Outfielder Seiya Suzuki has been working his way back from a knee injury. With Suzuki set to return, Carlson was ultimately designated for assignment.
Additionally, right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts was promoted to MLB in a corresponding move with Maton’s IL placement. He has pitched to a 4.91 ERA across 41 MLB relief outings.
The Cubs have been rather inconsistent in 2026. They currently hold a 6-6 overall record. Chicago will look to develop consistency this weekend in a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at home. The first game is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 2:20 PM EST at Wrigley Field.
