Cristian Romero’s dad confirms price of Tottenham release clause ahead of ‘bombshell’ return to former club

If rival clubs want Cristian Romero, he won’t come cheap.

Speaking to Argentinian outlet Cadena 3, Romero’s father confirmed the amount of the Tottenham Hotspur captain’s release clause.

“He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause,” Victor Romero said.

“The English club isn’t going to let him go for free; it’s between $50-70m [£37.8m-£53m].

“For me, they’ll want to recover what they invested.”

Tottenham signed Romero from Italian outfit Atalanta for £43million in August 2021.

The eight-figure fee made Romero the club’s second-most expensive player in history at the time.

Romero has gone on to make over 150 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions and played a pivotal role in ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought last season in the Europa League.

Where could Romero move to?

Despite his standing at the club, Romero has long been linked with a move to Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

talkSPORT reported last May that the World Cup winner was open to the possibility of a switch to the Spanish capital, with Atleti boss Diego Simeone a big admirer.

However, the 27-year-old seemingly put paid to the rumours by penning a four-year extension last August, meaning he was tied to Tottenham until 2029.

Amid the links to Atleti, one club mooted to be interested in Romero is his boyhood club, Club Atletico Belgrano.

Romero began his career with Belgrano and made 19 appearances for their first team before earning a move to Italian outfit Genoa in July 2018.

Completing a full circle moment would come as an almighty shock for the World Cup winner given Belgrano compete in the Argentinian first tier and Romero is in his prime years.

Romantic return would be ‘a bombshell’

But, as his father noted, ‘anything can happen’ in football.

When quizzed about the speculation, Victor said: “It’s a bombshell that keeps getting bigger.

“I hope it’s true. As a Belgrano fan and father, what more could I want? But I don’t know anything.

“Cuti isn’t one to make statements, that’s why it surprises me.

“I don’t know anything, but in football, anything can happen. Today, you might be thinking about being close to your family, and tomorrow, they put together a team to win the championship, and everything changes.

“I don’t want to lie.”

Romero’s future will no doubt be a subject of intrigue in the summer, although his most pressing issue is helping keep Tottenham in the Premier League.

The north London side sits 17th and just one point above the relegation zone with seven games remaining.

Tottenham will go into the final run home with their third different manager this term too after Roberto De Zerbi was appointed on a bumper five-year deal which does not include a relegation clause.

De Zerbi’s first match in charge is a trip to Sunderland on April 12.
