Cowboys rumors: Insider drops long-shot George Pickens scenario that would blow things up

Recently, it was reported by Todd Archer of ESPN that the Dallas Cowboys would not be holding long-term contract talks with George Pickens, whom the team placed a franchise tag on earlier this offseason. The news comes after what was a breakout year for Pickens during his first season with the Cowboys.

Now, Archer has dropped an interesting hypothetical as to how Pickens might proceed given this latest development.

“If he chooses, George Pickens could sit out until Week 10 of the regular season in order to gain an accredited year and hit free agency in 2027. Not sure that would be the best move for him, but it is possible,” reported Archer on X, formerly Twitter.

If he chooses to go that route, Pickens would be giving up a hefty chunk of salary for the upcoming season, so it will all depend on what he and his agent think his value would hypothetically be on the 2027 free agent market when deciding whether or not it would make sense financially for him to sit out.

Overall, Pickens is one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL, but he has dealt with inconsistency at times throughout his career, dating back to his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

When healthy, Pickens and fellow star CeeDee Lamb figure to form one of the most high-powered wide receiving duos in the NFL landscape, as they did during the stretch run of this past season, when the Cowboys were among the highest-scoring teams in the league.

Cowboys fans are hoping that the Pickens talks don’t go the same way things went with Micah Parsons, who ended up getting traded to the Green Bay Packers in surprising fashion.
