Cowboys insider highlights intriguing roster battle behind CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens

The Dallas Cowboys’ offense is primed to be one of the best in the NFL once again next season, with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens leading the way in the wide receiver room. While it’s pretty clear who Dak Prescott will be throwing the ball to more often than not, the rest of the group in the passing game is seemingly in a roster battle.

In the latest column for the Dallas News, Cowboys insider Joseph Hoyt went over which wide receivers on the roster are fighting for a spot on the roster. He says that besides Lamb and Pickens, Ryan Flournoy and KaVontae Turpin are considered locks as the No. 3 and 4 wideouts. The four players in contention for the fifth and maybe sixth spot on the roster include Marquz Valdes-Scantling, Anthony Smith, Traeshon Holden, and Jonathan Mingo.

“Veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling is on his eighth roster since 2021. He’s a journeyman, but he also has 3,686 receiving yards to his name. The 31-year-old feels like a reliable option if he can contribute on special teams,” Hoyt wrote. “Anthony Smith, a rookie seventh round pick out of East Carolina, is another name to keep an eye on.

“Perhaps the most intriguing candidate is former undrafted free agent wide receiver, Traeshon Holden… He appeared higher in the rotation during minicamp than some on the outside might’ve expected,” continued Hoyt. “And perhaps the receiver on the roster most in danger of losing a spot is former Panthers second-round pick, Jonathan Mingo. The Cowboys traded for him at the 2024 trade deadline, and it’s been hard for him to make an impact.”

The Cowboys have plenty of options at their disposal, and it may come down to either preference or who stands out the most during training camp. Valdes-Scantling brings a veteran presence to the back end of the wide receiver room, while Smith is a late-round flyer navigating the beginning of his NFL career.

Meanwhile, Holden could be the surprise choice for Dallas, especially if he can maintain his status in the rotation throughout training camp. Based on Hoyt’s comments, Mingo may be the odd man out, but he still has time to win over the coaching staff this offseason.
