Clear leader emerges in Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition – ‘Gap not close’

A clear leader is emerging in the Minnesota Vikings quarterback battle.

J.J. McCarthy has been joined in the room by former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray, following a tough 2025 NFL season.

After missing his rookie year through injury, the promising young signal caller managed just 10 appearances in his second campaign.

Heading into Year 3, and it’s fair to say McCarthy sounded far from impressed about Murray‘s arrival.

“Look, the organization made a decision that they feel like is going to improve the depth and the quality of the room,” he said Wednesday, after the first offseason practice session opened to reporters.

McCarthy then likened the Vikings QB room to a classroom.

“He sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach us and coach us,” the 23-year-old added.

McCarthy’s blunt assessment certainly turned heads, with one NFL reporter labeling him ‘salty’ in recent days.

And now Minnesota’s first open Organized Team Activities (OTAs) of the spring have passed, his mood might fall even further.

Kevin Seifert of ESPN was present at the training facility this week, and noted that there’s a clear ‘gap’ in quality between the two QBs battling for the starting spot.

“Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy both took snaps with projected starters and against the likely first-team defense,” he wrote.

“If you were drawing up a plan to give each player fair and equal time to prove they are the team’s best option, this would be it.

“But you can only have a genuine competition if there is actual uncertainty about who the best quarterback on the roster is.

“With the caveat that this was one day in May, with no pads and some drills performed at half speed, it is only fair to point out that the gap between the two quarterbacks was not close.”

Seifert went on to suggest that it was Murray who made a real impression.

“Murray made all of the best throws of the practice, demonstrating his downfield touch and accuracy,” he continued.

“Nothing McCarthy did was objectionable, and one of his few incompletions — a pass to the flat that cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. nearly intercepted — occurred when two receivers drifted far too close to each other.

“And while McCarthy’s post-practice comments about their relationship delivered headlines, it was Murray who might have said the most notable four words of the afternoon: ‘My confidence is unshakeable.’

“Overall, the afternoon was a reminder that McCarthy could continue along the upward trajectory he established at the end of last season — and still fall well short of matching Murray’s experience, arm talent and potential to make big plays in the passing game.”

It appears Murray has established himself as the early leader in Minnesota’s quarterback battle, and even delivered a verbal warning in practice.

But, that shouldn’t be unexpected.

The former $230.5 million Arizona Cardinals star is entering his eighth NFL season in 2026, while McCarthy is a far less experienced signal caller heading into Year 3.

He still has plenty of time to make an impression on head coach Kevin O’Connell, but at the same time, the Vikings surely wouldn’t have brought Murray on board to have him warm the bench.

McCarthy will be all too aware of that, which probably explains his blunt assessment of the situation.

If both quarterbacks continue the way they’ve started, Minnesota will be a very interesting watch this summer.
