Christian Pulisic sent warning on ‘dangerous’ fired Man United boss by European legend

AC Milan’s latest appointment could have a significant impact on Christian Pulisic.

The United States Men’s National Team superstar is currently representing his country at the 2026 World Cup on home soil, but his future at club-level has been a hot topic of discussion in recent weeks.

Pulisic has spent his entire club career in Europe, emerging as a teenage star for Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund before making the switch to the Premier League when he joined Chelsea in 2019.

Since 2023, the 27-year-old has been plying his trade for AC Milan, where he has been one of their best players, notching 42 goals and 27 assists in 134 games played across all competitions.

However, the Rossoneri’s decision to appoint former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim as their next manager after the firing of Max Allegri could have severe ramifications for Pulisic in the eyes of Dutch legend Ruud Gullit.

“Pulisic has done really well for Milan. He’s bailed them out on many occasions with individual brilliance, so he’s a quality player. I hope Amorim uses him,” Gullit told GOAL.

“But I’m always cautious with these things. You need to look at the players you have first and then build your tactics around them.

“If you impose a system that the squad has never played, you risk undermining their confidence. That’s very dangerous.”

It is unclear whether Pulisic will play any role in the Amorim era at Milan after reports emerged that Major League Soccer outfit New York City FC have put a lucrative offer out on the table for America’s golden boy.

NYCFC have reportedly offered a five-year deal with a salary worth $11.3 million annually to make him their marquee signing.

Pulisic’s current contract with Milan runs through June 2027, with a club option to extend for a further season, with the club therefore holding all the leverage.

For now, at least, all of Pulisic’s focus is on helping the USMNT advance as far as possible at the World Cup, starting with a round of 32 clash against Bosnia & Herzegovina.

This comes after the USMNT topped Group D after a 4-1 victory over Paraguay, in which Pulisic recorded an assist in 45 minutes of play before coming off with a minor calf injury.

A 2-0 win over Australia secured USMNT’s place in the knockout phase of the 48-team tournament.

Pressure on Amorim to make instant impact for Rossoneri

At the Theatre of Dreams, Amorim never wavered on deploying his 3-4-3 philosophy, and his unwillingness to adapt this to suit the players in his squad ultimately cost him his job as United plunged into the bottom-half of the Premier League table in the 2025-26 season.

While Amorim received 14 months to try and impress in the Premier League, Allegri was given just one season at Milan before the brass decided to move in a different direction.

Gullit, who spent six seasons with Milan and won back-to-back Serie A titles in 1991-92 and 1992-93, knows the pressure will be immediately on Amorim to deliver, with Milan having missed out on Champions League qualification last season with a fifth-place finish.

“Nothing surprises me anymore in football. I’ve seen many managers who haven’t performed particularly well still get high-profile jobs,” Gullit added.

“What I care about is Milan doing well – we’ve been far from the level we should be at. It’s extremely difficult to maintain a consistently high level.

“You need patience, and what you’re also seeing now is a lot of American ownership bringing a different philosophy into the game – and it doesn’t always work.

“The club makes the philosophy – not the coach. The coach needs to adapt to what the club wants and what kind of football they want to play.

“Look at what happened at Feyenoord. [Arne] Slot built a fantastic system, they won trophies and played great football. Then a new coach came in wanting to play with three at the back, and it didn’t work.

“After five or six games and lots of dropped points, he had to change it again. You have to respect the identity of the club.”
