Chris Haynes highly doubts LaMelo Ball will be suspended for final Play-In game

The Charlotte Hornets defeated the Miami Heat in the opening round of the Play-In Tournament to advance to the next round where they await the loser between the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic. The Hornets’ Play-In win was not without controversy, however, as LaMelo Ball was caught on camera engaging in a dangerous play towards Bam Adebayo.

LaMelo Ball was not ejected from the game, causing a stir from Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra after the loss to the Hornets, and there was rampant speculation that the NBA might take additional punishment for the next Play-In game. But count longtime NBA insider Chris Haynes as one who does not believe Ball is at risk of being suspended.

“I will say this … I do think there will be a penalty,” Hayes said via SiriusXM NBA Radio’s show, ‘Deals and Dunks,’ “A suspension? I would be highly surprised if that’s the case. But it’s something, definitely, that the NBA has to consider.”

The play in question occurred early in the second quarter as Ball went up for a layup. Adebayo contested the shot and his momentum carried him backwards toward the baseline. To make matters worse, Ball is seen grabbing at Adebayo’s ankle, causing the Heat big man to crash awkwardly on the floor.

Adebayo was ultimately ruled out for the rest of the game due to a back injury.

Despite the dangerous play, Ball ended up being the hero as he hit the go-ahead shot late in the game to help secure the win for the Hornets.
