Chiefs suffer blow to weapon who impressed Andy Reid and was becoming Patrick Mahomes’ new favorite

Patrick Mahomes might have a new favorite weapon in 2026.

The three-time Super Bowl champion has made it back for training camp, despite tearing his ACL and LCL eight months ago.

Last season, he relied heavily on 36-year-old veteran and close friend Travis Kelce (851 yards), as well as Hollywood Brown (587 yards), Rashee Rice (571 yards) and speedster Xavier Worthy (532 yards).

Brown, the wideout who racked up the most yards for the team in a dismal 6-11 season, has now departed.

Rice and Worthy were expected to be the ones showing out in training camp as they battle to be star receiver, but have been overshadowed by a new rookie teammate.

In the opening days of practice, Cyrus Allen has done far more than the Chiefs expected.

According to Nate Taylor of ESPN, he already has Kansas City ‘recalculating’ what he could be in the NFL.

Taylor wrote Saturday: “Allen, a rookie receiver the Chiefs drafted in the fifth round, has emerged as one of the team’s top developments in the opening week of training camp.

“Each day, Allen’s snaps with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the first-team offense have increased — and so have his highlights.”

Allen, who played college ball for Cincinnati — much like Kelce did — has ‘dominated’ on-field work in recent days.

Taylor reports he is leading all receivers with five catches during the projected starters’ 11-on-11 reps, and garnered the loudest reception from fans in attendance.

He’s even caught the eye of head coach Andy Reid.

Speaking of Allen, Big Red said: “He’s done a nice job. The quarterback trusts him.”

Fellow receiver Worthy has also been impressed.

“This isn’t even surprising. He’s going to continue showing out in camp,” the third-year star said of his rookie teammate.

All the good work Allen has done so far, though, was nearly lost on Saturday.

During a special teams punt rep, Allen collided with a teammate and was carted off the field.

“Allen stayed down with his helmet buried in the turf and then needed help to get off the field,” Taylor reported.

“Allen left the field in the front of the cart with what appeared to be a left knee injury.”

Fans quickly feared the worst, but the Chiefs later got the ‘best’ news they could have hoped for.

“Tests on Chiefs rookie WR Cyrus Allen revealed a shin bruise, per source,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed Saturday afternoon.

“Nothing was torn or broken – a best-case scenario.”

The Chiefs consider Allen day-to-day, KC Star columnist Sam McDowell has reported.

Allen, a 5-foot-11 rookie, entered camp expecting to compete against Nikko Remigio and Jalen Royals for the No. 4 receiver role.

Through three days, thanks to his stellar production, he quickly elevated himself over those two, and was expected to be in the huddle with Mahomes when the Chiefs had their first padded practice on Monday.

With a shin bruise, he might not make it onto the field for then, but Kansas City will hope to have him back soon.

Allen could still feature in the fast-approaching preseason games, against the Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the coming weeks.

“It’s still a surreal moment for me because I used to play the (Madden) game with Pat a lot,” Allen said of Mahomes over the weekend.

“I’m pretty familiar with what he (does). That was my favorite team. Everything is pretty much timing.

“This (isn’t) college anymore. This is big-boy ball. I’m on his time, and everything is very precise.”
