Chepauk to host BBL 2026-27 opener between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers
The Melbourne Renegades are set to take on defending champions Perth Scorchers in the season opener of the 2026-27 Big Bash League on December 12, which, for the first time, will be hosted at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This is the first time that the league has moved out of Australia
The match is set to commence at 2:40 pm IST, which is 8:10 pm AEST, and is expected to begin after the close of Day 4 of the first Test between Australia and New Zealand at the Perth Stadium. The fixture will count as a home game for the Renegades.
As reported by Cricinfo, the fixture was officially announced at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, July 10, at an event attended by Anthony Albanese and Narendra Modi, the prime ministers of Australia and India, respectively. The event has been secured by both governments and was funded by a grant from the Centre of Australia-India Relations, with future collaborations expected. Cricket Australia will provide funding but is also on the lookout for commercial benefits.
"The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association is privileged to partner with Cricket Australia in this landmark occasion of staging the first-ever Big Bash League match in India. This historic event reflects the spirit of collaboration between our organisations and underscores our shared commitment to delivering cricket at the highest international standards," TJ Srinivasaraj, President of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), said.
"There's certainly been interest from time to time at state government level and at venue level, and with some of our clubs to imagine what that could look like bringing an IPL game out here. The IPL's next level, isn't it, - and it would bring an amazing connection. We've seen already the hype around an NFL game in Melbourne," Alistair Dobson, executive general manager of Big Bash Leagues, said.
Both teams are set to fly to India on December 6, after the sixth round of Sheffield Shield fixtures is completed that day. Players involved in that game could get just four days to prepare for this contest. The full schedule for the 2026-27 season will be announced next week, with the two teams set to get extended breaks before their second fixture.
"There's a lot of work to be done. As you can imagine, taking any sporting event overseas is a challenge. Taking a cricket game is complex, but we're going into a market that we know loves the game and puts on big cricket events every day of the week. Fitting this game into a hectic BBL schedule and for those teams to be able to travel back and return back to Australia and continue on a successful BBL campaign was important. The scheduling part was probably front of mind," Dobson said.
A few games of the Caribbean Premier League were hosted in Florida in the past, apart from which leagues have not been relocated unless forced to. The IPL has been played in South Africa and the UAE due to clashes with election cycles and COVID-19 restrictions. Ticket prices are set to be announced in the following weeks, with CA and the BBL looking to generate maximum gate receipts from the home venue of the Chennai Super Kings, which seats roughly 35,000 people.
"We know they're incredibly passionate cricket fans all over India, but particularly in Chennai "Everyone we've spoken to has been really optimistic that we should expect a good crowd. What has become clear to us as we've built this event out is just how popular the BBL already is in India. Sometimes we can perhaps not realise that or forget that," Dobson said.
"It's got nothing on the IPL, obviously, but the BBL is well-liked and respected, so we can't wait to see all the fans turn out, albeit I suspect there'll be a fair chunk of yellow in the crowd. We want people in Australia watching on the TV to see that looking like a BBL game, but we also want people in Chennai and throughout India to get the unique BBL experience, whether that's the colour and the crowd and the great cricket and all the noise that comes with a BBL game. That's our primary focus," he added.
The full squads for the two teams have yet to be announced, but the game is expected to feature stars like Australian T20I skipper Mitch Marsh and all-rounder Cooper Connolly, the latter of whom left a significant mark in his debut season in the IPL in 2026.
