Celtics rumors: Insider states obvious about Joe Mazzulla’s job security despite 3-1 collapse

After being one of the surprise teams of the regular season and securing the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference standings, the Boston Celtics saw their season end in disappointing fashion after blowing a 3-1 lead in the opening round of the NBA playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. And could that potentially have a ripple effect on Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla?

Well Celtics fans can rest easy as the team’s collapse in the playoffs against the 76ers will have absolutely no effect on Joe Mazzulla’s future as head coach, as per Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe.

“Despite the dispiriting loss to the 76ers, all indications are that Mazzulla will be back next season too,” Himmelsbach reports. “He is expected to be named Coach of the Year in the coming days.”

After the Celtics won three of the first four games of their playoff series, the 76ers were energized by the return of Joel Embiid and won three straight games to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals. To make matters worse for the Celtics, they lost star forward Jayson Tatum for Game 7 after he sustained a calf injury.

It will be interesting to see what the Celtics do in the offseason in terms of roster building. The foundation for a contending team is pretty much in place, they just likely need a few roster tweaks here or there.

The 2026-27 season will be Mazzulla’s fifth at the helm as head coach. He led the Celtics to the 2024 NBA championship, and until this season, he had advanced past the opening round each year.
