Celtics’ Jayson Tatum appreciates Knicks fans’ gesture in MSG return

New York Knicks fans, like arguably all sports fans in The Big Apple, are extremely passionate when they are watching their team play. It does not take long for rabid enthusiasm to turn into unrelenting vitriol, but there is a time when the game is not the most important story of the night. The packed and fervid crowd that attended Madison Square Garden for Thursday’s marquee matchup versus the Boston Celtics offered a fairly warm reception to Jayson Tatum.

The 2024 NBA champion returned to The World’s Most Famous Arena for the first time since suffering a ruptured Achilles in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on May 12. He has been open about the emotional distress that moment caused and was admittedly not excited to compete in MSG again, so the Knicks fans who applauded during player introductions deserve credit for making the evening easier for Tatum to digest.

The superstar forward was grateful for the hospitality, and he expressed as much following a 112-106 loss to New York.

“Jayson Tatum said he appreciated the ovation he received during introductions here tonight, and said that it’s meant a lot to him how people around the NBA have reacted to his return to the court and from his injury this season,” ESPN’s Tim Bontemps posted on X.

Although The Garden Faithful were largely kind to the four-time All-NBA First-Team selection, they surely took great pleasure in watching him struggle from the floor. Tatum scored 24 points while shooting 7-of-22 from the field and 2-of-10 from 3-point range. He also recorded 13 rebounds and eight assists, once again finding ways to produce even when he is out of form offensively. Though, with Jaylen Brown out due to left Achilles tendinitis, Boston could not overcome a cold outing from its other pillar.

The Celtics (54-26) will now have to wait until Friday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans (26-54) for the chance to clinch the No. 2 seed in the East. Tatum is not playing back-to-backs at this time, so fans should not expect to see him on the floor for that one.

The 28-year-old could have skipped Thursday’s clash with the Knicks instead, thereby sparing himself the dread of stepping onto the court. But returning to MSG was important to him, and the crowd clearly understood that.
