Celtics’ Jaylen Brown makes ‘hidden agenda’ claim on refs after collapse vs. 76ers

Jaylen Brown called out the lack of consistent officiating following the Boston Celtics’ exit from the 2026 NBA playoffs after losing in seven games to the Philadelphia 76ers this past weekend.

Brown experienced the best regular season of his career as the Celtics’ top star while Jayson Tatum rehabbed his Achilles for most of the campaign. He got to be in MVP conversations as he will likely land on one of the three All-NBA teams.

However, his playstyle garnered attention in the playoffs. One of the moves he did throughout the first-round series ended up seeing him get offensive fouls, something that Brown noted was the complete opposite in the regular season. He even noted other players who do the same move during his live stream on May 3.

“You know how many players do that? That it’s a common play, a basketball play [that] every player does. So why are you targeting me? They clearly had an agenda, like, maybe because I spoke and was critical of those refs in the regular season. So you know how they responded? Like, ‘we can call every foul. You’re gonna lead the playoffs and offensive fouls,'” Brown said.

“That was the response from the officiating crew. You could clearly tell. And I’ve actually spoke to some refs, and they said it was an agenda going into each game. ‘Anytime Jaylen brings his arm up, just from reputation, just call it. But Paul George does the same thing. Jalen Brunson does the same thing. S***. I can go down the list. It’s a basketball play, whether y’all believe it or not. You know what I mean. Everybody does that when you drive, especially if you got bodies on you.”

Brown averaged 25.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game throughout the first-round series against the 76ers. In the Game 7 loss, he put up a valiant effort with 34 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three blocks to show for it.

The Celtics enter the offseason with questions to answer about the roster, especially when it comes to surrounding Tatum and Brown with the best supporting cast possible.
