Carolina Hurricanes ‘beer skate’ so popular that things are getting dumb on eBay

The Carolina Hurricanes unveiled their new “beer skate” over the weekend ahead of their second-round series with the Philadelphia Flyers, and it was a bigger hit than they could have possibly imagined. Selling out minutes after being made available, a lot of fans were left clamoring to find the newest novelty beverage container hitting the NHL.

The empty skate cups sold for $19 on Saturday night. For $31 you could get a skate filled with 28 oz of beer, and for $22 fans could get skates filled with candy. Naturally this led to frenzy selling, and now both new and used skates are popping up on eBay for ridiculous pricing. These aren’t just empty price-gouging listings either, with actual bids being placed on a skate now up to over $180.

There are already hundreds of fans asking the Hurricanes on social media when the skates will be back in stock, if at all. There’s no good answer to that, with even the Canes’ social media admins saying they haven’t managed to get a skate yet.

There’s nothing like a good promotional beer beer vessel. In terms of cool factor this might still be just a touch behind Buffalo’s beer sabre.

It’s just perfect.
