Carnell Tate’s NFL Draft fate makes Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith more impressive to analyst

The Ohio State Buckeyes won College Football’s National Championship two years ago, beating Notre Dame in the title game. They surrendered that title as well as the Big Ten championship to Indiana and Fernando Mendoza last year, but it would not be a surprise to see Ryan Day’s team contend for yet another championship in 2026.

The key to Ohio State’s success has been the consistent ability to bring in the game’s elite players, and Day deserves credit for keeping the Buckeyes at or near the top when it comes to recruiting. However, the key player on this year’s team is once again superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.

He came into the program prior to the 2024 season as the most sensational freshman in the nation. He has delivered in both of his seasons with the Buckeyes.

He had 76 receptions for 1,315 yard and 15 touchdowns in the national championship season and he followed up 87 receptions for 1,243 yards and 12 TDs last year.

Even with Smith dominating for the Buckeyes, fellow Ohio State wideout Carnell Tate was the No. 4 overall selection by the Tennessee Titans. Tate is clearly an excellent wideout, but Smith has been the best receiver in the nation. College football analyst Greg McElroy is thoroughly impressed with Smith.

“He is arguably the best player in college football, regardless of position,” McElroy said. “He comes back his junior year. Had he gone out last year, he would’ve been a no-doubt, consensus Top-10 pick. Think about this for a second. The guy that was No. 2 on Ohio State last year in receiving, he went fourth overall. That just goes to show you how good Jeremiah Smith is.”
