Carlos Alcaraz beats Novak Djokovic to ATP record but still falls short of Andy Murray

Carlos Alcaraz has overtaken Novak Djokovic’s record points haul for a single season.

It sees the reigning world No.1 top the points ranking for the second time in his career.

The Spaniard recorded 12,050 points in 2025, 20 more than Djokovic’s sum in 2020.

Despite enjoying a blistering season overall, Alcaraz fell short of Andy Murray’s grand total of 12,410 recorded in 2016.

Alcaraz finished ahead of world No.2 Jannik Sinner who posted 11,500 ranking points.

There was a sizeable gap between second and third place with Alexander Zverev finishing with 5,160 points – 6,300 less than the Italian.

The dominant duo

The rankings show the level of dominance of Alcaraz and Sinner have enjoyed this season, exemplified by the fact they have jointly won eight of the nine ATP events with the biggest ranking points up for grabs.

Alcaraz is the first male player to finish a season with over 12,000 points since Djokovic five years ago.

And impressively he earned 88 per cent of his total (10,640) between the months of April and November.

Alcaraz, Sinner and Zverev are just the second trio of players this century to finish as the top three in back-to-back seasons.

The last to do it was the legendary threesome of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Djokovic.

Hit hard in the pocket

The achievement comes as welcome news after Alcaraz was penalised for not participating in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.

The Spaniard lost out on a whopping £1.8million in prize money for absences following the implementation of ATP’s One Vision strategic plan that follows strict rules to those who choose not to compete.

Alcaraz was set to scoop £3.6m but a breach of the rule sees a player’s winnings slashed by 25 per cent for each Masters 1000 tournament they miss due to withdrawal or injury, with a maximum of three.

Then, from the fourth absence the prize money reduces by a full 100 per cent.

Alcaraz missed the Canada Open during the summer before skipping the Shanghai Open in late September among others, meaning he will pocket £1.8m instead.

The Spaniard claimed seven titles in total during 2025 with two Grand Slam victories to his name.

He was victorious at the French open before adding the US Open title to his list of achievements in September.
