Cardinals trade pitcher to Rays in intriguing move

The St. Louis Cardinals have had a surprisingly good season. St. Louis is making a roster move on Tuesday, trading pitcher Chris Roycroft to the Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa Bay will be sending a player to be named later or future cash considerations, the Cardinals announced.

Roycroft is a relief pitcher who has seen limited action this season for the Redbirds. The pitcher has appeared in seven games and holds a 15.19 ERA.

The hurler worked in both 2024 and 2025 for St. Louis. He pitched in at least 20 games in both of those seasons, with a career-high in appearances in 2024. Roycroft has two career victories in Major League Baseball.

In his last outing on June 17, Roycroft struggled for St. Louis against the San Diego Padres. He allowed three earned runs in just one-plus inning of work. This season, the hurler has allowed nine earned runs.

St. Louis is currently second in the National League Central. The Cardinals hold a 42-34 record. It’s been a pleasant surprise, considering the team parted ways with several veterans ahead of the 2026 campaign.

The Cardinals are instead led this season by their young players, including JJ Wetherholt. Wetherholt had a gem of a game on Sunday, hitting home runs in back-to-back innings. He did it in a game against the Kansas City Royals. It is the first time a Cardinals player has done that in five years.

Like St. Louis, Tampa Bay is also having a good season. The Rays are second in the American League East. Tampa Bay has a 43-32 record.

The Cardinals host the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday. Tampa Bay meanwhile plays the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
