Cardinals gets bold trade deadline prediction from ex-GM

The MLB Trade Deadline isn’t until August 3. However, rumors are flying about who will go where and where. Among those are the St. Louis Cardinals, who are reportedly looking to upgrade their pitching.

Former MLB general manager Jim Duquette says the Cardinals will push to acquire a starting pitcher before the Trade Deadline, per MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM.

“I think they’ll make a deal for a starting pitcher,” he said.

Duquette was the general manager for the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles.

Currently, the Cardinals have a fairly solid starting rotation led by Dustin May, Michael McGreevy, and Kyle Leahy. May pitched a 3-0 shutout against the San Diego Padres on Monday. However, their bullpen is struggling. They are ranked 17th in bullpen ERA at 4.21.

All in all, the Cardinals have been heavily reliant on a mix of veterans and young prospects to get them through. At the same time, they’re looking to put together a starting rotation for the long term.

Much of what St. Louis will do in terms of pitching is whether or not they can contend for the playoffs. Currently, they are 39-31, 4.5 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central Division.

Dustin May and starting pitcher JoJo Romero are rumored to be on the trading block. Among the names being floated out as potential targets are Robbie Ray (San Francisco Giants), Reid Detmers ( Los Angeles Angels), and Jeffrey Springs (Athletics).

Each of whom would be flexible from a pitching and financial standpoint.
