Astros’ Joe Espada gets brutally honest on trade deadline outlook

The Houston Astros are preparing for the upcoming MLB trade deadline. The trade deadline is scheduled for Monday and it looks like the Astros will be buyers. Houston has not had the best season, but the ball club is still only one half-game out of first place in the American League West standings and only one game back of an AL Wild Card spot. Manager Joe Espada recently shared his thoughts on his team’s trade deadline outlook, via MLB Network Radio.

“The message has been, we have been able to climb from, we were 11 games under .500… We were 10 games out of first place. We have done it (bounced back) with the people in this room,” Espada said. “We haven’t got any help from the outside, it’s just been us… If the front office goes and gets someone to help us, we welcome them… But we are a half-game out of first place because of the people in this room.

“We can do it with the people in this room… That’s my message.”

It looked like the Astros may be trade deadline sellers early in the season. The ball club was underperforming overall, and even superstar Yordan Alvarez was mentioned as a trade candidate. It is now safe to say that Alvarez — who may end up winning the Triple Crown this season — will not be moved before the trade deadline. If the Astros make any moves, it will be to improve their current MLB roster.

With that being said, Espada believes the current roster has enough talent to make a postseason run.
