Canadiens’ Martin St. Louis reveals secret behind road success in postseason

The Montreal Canadiens became the first team to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes during this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. Montreal defeated Carolina in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final, on Thursday. Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis is opening up about the team’s success, especially on the road.

“I don’t think it’s one thing,” St. Louis said, per NHL.com. “I feel like it’s probably a little confidence for how the season went for us on the road. I think we believe.”

St. Louis’ sentiment was mirrored by one of his assistants. Montreal is now 7-2 on the road this postseason.

“It’s something usually as a coaching staff we’ve been talking about,” Montreal assistant Stephane Robidas said of the road record. “Maybe we keep it simple on the road. We’re not forcing anything. Sometimes at home in front of our fans, we want to do a little too much.”

Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final is on Saturday night.

The Canadiens survived a thrilling seven-game series with the Buffalo Sabres, to advance to the conference final. They now face a rested Carolina team. Carolina had swept both the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers, to make the conference final.

Montreal came right out of the gate with a win in Game 1. Canadiens players are hungry to keep up the pressure in Game 2. So is St. Louis, who wants his guys to keep working cohesively.

“You’ve got to trust that the guys, like I always say, play the game that’s in front of them, understanding who is on the other side, who is on the ice while that’s happening,” St. Louis said. “As much as players, young players, they love to have these offensive touches and I think sometimes it’s just not what the game is giving you. You’ve got to defend. And I think our defensive game has evolved and improved over the last few years. That’s allowing us to be a good road team.”

Time will tell if Montreal can pick up another road win on Saturday.
