Canadiens’ Game 5 comeback adds to Stanley Cup-winning trend
The Montreal Canadiens are a win away from reaching the Eastern Conference Final round of the 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Habs pulled off another come-from-behind win on Thursday night against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center in Buffalo to get the 3-2 series lead, with a home game coming right up. Buffalo struck early in Game 5, with Jason Zucker scoring two minutes into the opening period. The Canadiens and the Sabres went back and forth for the remainder of the frame, with Buffalo on top, 3-2, after 20 minutes of play.
From that point forward, it was all Montreal, as the Canadiens scored all of the next four goals in the game for a 6-3 victory.
Including the 2025-26 NHL regular season, Montreal now has 30 comeback wins.
One such victory in this postseason, and the Canadiens will tie a franchise record, which will also be a great sign for their chances to raise the Cup.
The 1975-76 and 1992-93 versions of the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup after recording 31 come-from-behind wins in those campaigns, according to Sportsnet Stats on X, formerly Twitter.
But of course, it is still more ideal for the Canadiens (or for any team, for that matter) to score first than find themselves trailing at any point of a game, especially against the dangerous Sabres.
Montreal can finish the job against the Sabres on Saturday at Bell Centre in Montreal.
Waiting for the winner of this Canadiens-Sabres series in the Eastern Conference Finals are the still-undefeated Carolina Hurricanes, who swept the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers in the first two rounds.
