Can Graham Potter speak Swedish and what is his connection to the country?

Graham Potter is going to be on the touchline at the 2026 World Cup this summer after leading Sweden to the tournament.

The former Chelsea, West Ham and Brighton manager was appointed as boss of the Swedish national team in October 2025.

And within five months and four games in the role, Potter had secured them a place in North America for the World Cup.

He lost his first match in charge in November, but has since gone on to win two and draw one of his following outings.

Potter is English, of course, but he has a very strong connection to Sweden and has no trouble with his communication…

Can Graham Potter speak Swedish?

Potter can speak fluent Swedish after spending seven seasons as the manager of Ostersunds from 2011 to 2018.

He shocked Premier League fans when he was appointed as Sweden boss during his unveiling press conference.

The 50-year-old spoke fluently in the native language, making use of his learning from his previous stint in the country.

And following that conference, Potter spoke further about how he was going to approach the language barrier as manager.

He said last November: “I can speak Swedish but my answers won’t be as good then, we can probably all agree on that.

“So there is a balance there between giving you [the media] as good and detailed answers as possible and speaking Swedish.”

Potter clearly has a strong grasp of the Swedish language and that is sure to help him when communicating with his players.

Potter’s spell in Sweden

Potter’s connection with Sweden runs deep after beginning his professional management career in the country.

He took over Ostersunds in 2011 and went on to spend seven years with the club, taking them from the fourth tier of Swedish football to the top-flight and then into Europe.

Eventually, his achievements led to interest from other clubs and he joined Swansea in 2018, before moving to Brighton a year later.

That gave him his first Premier League job and he thrived with the Seagulls, going on to spend three years at the club.

Chelsea then scooped him up in 2022, but the biggest move of his career to date didn’t go very well.

Potter would struggle with the Blues and ended up being quickly sacked with the club sitting 11th in the top-flight.

A short spell as West Ham boss would follow in 2025, but following a nightmare nine months in charge, that included just six wins in 25 games, he was dismissed.

Then Sweden came calling and he has now taken them to the World Cup, hoping that this job can reignite his career.
