BYU, Hawks coach on shortlist for vacant head coach position
The Chicago Bulls are still looking for their next head coach. They missed out on the chance to hire Sean Sweeney after the Orlando Magic snatched him up on Friday.
Nevertheless, they are still on the hunt. On Friday, ESPN’s Jamal Collier reported that BYU head coach Kevin Young was a potential candidate. Then it was K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Sports Network who reported that Atlanta Hawks assistant coach Ryan Schmidt was a consideration.
Schmidt formerly worked under the new VP of Basketball Operations, Bryson Graham. He has extensive experience coaching in the NBA G League and on the international level. He was an assistant coach for the Raptors 905 from 2017 to 2021.
Before coaching at BYU, Young had previous NBA experience. He was an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers from 2016 to 2020. Afterward, he served as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns from 2020 to 2021 and then as an associate head coach from 2021 to 2024.
Schmidt was the head coach for Brampton/Hamilton Honey Badgers in the CEBL and the London Lions from 2022 to 2024. He then became the head coach of the Hawks’ G League team, the College Park Skyhawks, in 2024.
In April, Billy Donovan stepped down as head coach after six seasons with the Bulls. At the same time, the Bulls are undergoing a complete top-down revitalization of the organization.
So far, rumors have circulated about who the Bulls are looking at as potential head coaching candidates. Among them are Chris Quinn of the Miami Heat, Tiago Splitter of the Portland Trail Blazers, Johnnie Bryant of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Dave Bliss of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
