Bucks rumors: Why NBA hasn’t commented on Gary Trent Jr.’s baffling $64 million contract yet
Apparently, the biggest surprise from the Milwaukee Bucks in the offseason was not trading Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat.
Many were baffled after the Bucks re-signed Gary Trent Jr. to a four-year extension worth $64 million. For perspective, Trent is set to earn more next season than Mitchell Robinson, Tobias Harris, Isaiah Stewart, and Bobby Portis, just to name a few.
Trent, who is represented by Rich Paul, was rewarded with a big deal despite averaging just 8.1 points, his lowest since his rookie year, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists. He only shot 38.7% from the field, a significant dip compared to previous years.
Some stated that the Bucks may have circumvented the salary cap with Trent’s new contract, urging the NBA to look into it. The league, however, has remained mum, as noted by NBA insider Marc Stein.
“The deal has not yet been formally announced by the Bucks, which I’m told is among the reasons that the league office has issued no official response to requests for comment on the signing amid copious amounts of external noise that it is, at the very least, quite curious in the wake of the two low-dollar deals that Trent (repped by the aforementioned Paul’s Klutch Sports agency) signed with them and how he performed in 2025-26,” wrote Stein.
Trent joined the Bucks in 2024 on a one-year minimum deal. Last year, he re-signed on a two-year extension worth $7.5 million.
Stein added that NBA commissioner Adam Silver is expected to hold a media conference on Tuesday in Las Vegas amid the Summer League.
“Silver will almost assuredly be asked about the Trent deal as well as for specifics about the league’s role in Toronto’s (Raptors) decision last week to put its agreed-upon trade with the Los Angeles Clippers to re-acquire (Kawhi) Leonard on an indefinite hold,” added Stein.
Trent is expected to play a minimal role, with Ryan Rollins, Kevin Porter Jr., Tyler Herro, AJ Green, Kasparas Jakucionis, Caris LeVert, and Brayden Burries also in the backcourt rotation.
