Buccaneers rumors: Baker Mayfield won’t hold out during contract negotiations

As the offseason looms on, the contract renegotiations between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield have become a crucial topic. Mayfield has been a standout for the Buccaneers over the past three seasons, leading the team to immense success. Now, his contract is up for renegotiation, and it appears that both sides are looking to come to an amicable conclusion.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler gave the latest on where both sides stand when it comes to the contract re-negotiation.

“The conversation is pretty simple. Eleven different quarterbacks in the NFL make at least $50 million a year. Mayfield can make the argument that he’s better than at least a few of them. So he’s gonna need a significant raise. Now I’ve asked around and I’m sensing that Tampa is not overly worried about this right now because they have the next six weeks before Training camp to potentially hash this out. They see Mayfield in their long-term plans.

Fowler also indicated that the conversation between the two sides has not been ugly, and Baker won’t be holding out if the issue isn’t resolved close to the start of the season.

“This hasn’t been an ugly negotiation from my sense. It’s still relatively fresh and new so it’s not like they’ve been talking for months and hit an impasse. They just have to make some progress based on the initial talks. [The] Bucs are dedicated to try to do this and my sense is Mayfield won’t hold out.”

Mayfield joined the team in 2023 and emerged as a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback for the Buccaneers. He’s played every game for Tampa Bay through his three seasons with the team and led the Buccaneers to the playoffs in 2023 and 2024.
