Bruins’ Marco Strum admits ‘frustrating point’ in collapse vs. Sabres
The Boston Bruins played Game 1 against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night. And they held a 2-0 lead in the third period. Boston had all the momentum in the contest. Unfortunately for them, it came crashing down thanks to Tage Thompson and Mattias Samuelsson.
Thompson scored two goals in the third period to tie the game. And then, with three and a half minutes remaining, Samuelsson gave Buffalo the lead. Despite a late goal from Boston, the Sabres held on to win by the score of 4-3. Buffalo leads this first-round matchup 1-0.
Bruins head coach Marco Sturm acknowledged his team’s performance for most of the game. They did well giving the inexperienced Sabres a taste of how difficult playoff hockey can be. However, Sturm lamented the team’s inability to close out this game.
“We played a really good hockey game for us. We just couldn’t finish it. That’s the frustrating point,” Sturm said, via Buffalo News reporter Lance Lysowski.
The experience difference on display is something that can certainly play a role in this series. The Bruins, despite missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, have loads of postseason experience. However, the Sabres are making their first postseason in 14 years.
In any event, Game 1 went the way of Buffalo. Boston had the chance to put a stamp on this game. But they allowed nearly 40 shots on goal. That many chances, combined with an energetic, antagonistic crowd, aided the Sabres in their comeback attempt.
The Bruins can shake this off, and they have time to figure things out. Still, the margin of error has shrunk a bit. Buffalo and Boston hit the ice again at the KeyBank Center on Tuesday night for Game 2.
