The San Francisco 49ers may need to evaluate their long-term commitment at quarterback as questions mount around Brock Purdy‘s consistency.

In four starts this season, Purdy has thrown more interceptions (seven) than Mac Jones did in his eight starts (six) while Purdy was injured. In Week 12, the 49ers defeated the Carolina Panthers despite Purdy throwing three interceptions.

Based in part on his lucrative contract, Purdy drew a harsh review after his latest performance.

“Brock Purdy was obviously awful last night,” Colin Cowherd said. “Once you make $53 million a year, that’s more than [Patrick] Mahomes, and it’s more than Matthew Stafford. If you made $12 million a year or you had Bryce Young’s contract, I wouldn’t care. Those three picks, those are not $53 million a year throws.”

The situation has drawn scrutiny as Purdy enters each game with heightened expectations tied to his financial commitment. Moreover, his play has been uneven since returning from a toe injury.

Against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11, he threw for 200 yards with three touchdowns and no turnovers. His performance shifted dramatically against Carolina, when he threw three first-half interceptions and finished with 193 yards and one touchdown.

The Panthers could not capitalize on Purdy’s mistakes, as Young threw two interceptions himself. San Francisco’s defense held firm to keep pace in the NFC West race.

Purdy faces a challenging road test in Week 13 against the Cleveland Browns, who have the league’s second-ranked pass defense and are second in sacks.

Myles Garrett anchors that unit as an All-Pro edge rusher. The short week coming off “Monday Night Football” presents a difficult preparation window for a quarterback operating under the high standards attached to his contract.
