Braves’ Matt Olson made Lou Gehrig Ironman history with walk-off vs Tigers
It seems like Atlanta’s Matt Olson is traveling in historic territory this season. And a reason for his success comes from adjustments. Olson took a new step when he made Lou Gehrig Ironman history with his walk-off against the Tigers, according to The Athletic.
“Olson just hit the first walk-off home run by a guy with that many consecutive games played since … Lou Gehrig!” Jayson Stark wrote.
Olson’s ironman streak is up to 820 games played in a row. And he pulled the walk-off in game 813 of his streak.
Braves 1B Matt Olson brings up Lou Gehrig memory
There’s no doubt Gehrig played a long time ago.
“On Sept. 8, 1937, in game No. 1,936 of his fabled 2,130-game streak, Gehrig broke a 6-6 tie against the Red Sox with a walk-off three-run homer with two outs in the ninth,” Stark wrote. “It scored Joe DiMaggio and Red Rolfe. And nearly 90 years later, it just roared back to life.”
That’s baseball craziness. Not Cal Ripken or Miguel Tejada. Not Steve Garvey or Billy Williams or Stan Musial.
Olson is hitting .301 on the season. He has 13 homers and 33 RBIs. Also, he has 15 doubles. And it comes from adjustments, according to a post on X by 92.9 The Game.
“I think he’s made a couple of subtle adjustments in his setup that is contributing to his ability to be able to drive the ball out of the ballpark from foul pole to foul pole,” Chipper Jones said. “We always talk about approach, we always want to hunt something hard and out over the plate where guys can get extended, which you have to drive the ball to the off-gap. So, we want to see those balls being driven into the gap and out of the ballpark. The offspeed we clip to the pullside.”
“He is on it right now, man. He’s turned his front foot in pretty severely at the plate, and it’s keeping his front hip in, keeping it from flying, which has always been his problem. He’s staying closed and letting the ball travel.”
