Blue Jays reach new low after wasting bullpen’s effort vs Twins

The Toronto Blue Jays have dropped to 6-9 on the season after losing two of three to the Minnesota Twins. The starting pitching for the Jays in the series was a disaster, including a brutal start from Max Scherzer in the final game of the series.

While starting pitching was an issue, the bullpen was stellar, setting franchise history in the series according to Sportsnet Stats.

“15.1 innings by Blue Jays’ relievers without allowing a run is their most in a series they lost in franchise history. Previous record was 11.1 in a series against the Mariners from September 11 to 13, 2012,” Sportsnet posted on X, formerly Twitter.

In the first game of the series, the Blue Jays took the win with the help of the bullpen and offense. Patrick Crobin pitched four innings, giving up four runs and two home runs. Still, the Jays scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, leading to the Jays taking the lead. The bullpen went five innings, giving up a hit and a walk, while striking out nine, as Joe Mantiply got the win in the game.

Game two also saw the starting pitching put the Blue Jays behind in the game. Eric Lauer pitched five and a third innings, giving up five hits, five walks, two home runs, and seven runs overall. Spencer Miles pitched 3.2 innings of relief, giving up just one hit and a walk, but the team was not able to make a comeback.

The final game of the series saw Scherzer go just 2 and one-third innings, giving up five hits, two walks, and two home runs, leading to eight runs against. The bullpen would go on to give up just three hits in the remaining six and two-thirds innings, but once again, the Jays could not make the comeback.

The Blue Jays will hope to have more success from their starting pitching when they return to the field on Tuesday, with Kevin Gausman on the mound, looking to turn around an early-season slump.
