Blue Jays’ Brandon Valenzuela walks off Phillies with clutch hit

The Toronto Blue Jays lost the first game of their three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. But on Tuesday, Brandon Valenzuela ensured that same outcome didn’t happen again.

Toronto found themselves down 2-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning. But then Myles Straw scored on a wild pitch from Philadelphia closer Jhoan Duran. With no outs and a runner on third, Valenzuela laced a ball into left field to send the fans home happy on 3-2 win.

The walk-off single marked Valenzuela’s only hit of the ball game. Still, it should make a pretty strong on the Blue Jays’ front office as they evaluate his long-term future.

Following Sunday’s win, Valenzuela is now hitting .252 with seven home runs and 17 RBIs through his first 45 games at the major league level. He has gotten his opportunity due to Alejandro Kirk’s injury. But even when he returns, Valenzuela may still have a place on the major league roster.

Prior to his call up, the catcher/first baseman hit .242 with 48 home runs and 293 RBIs over 586 minor league games. He has struggled a bit at the Triple-A level, hitting .201 with four home runs and 20 RBIs. However, Valenzuela has adjusted to MLB pitching much better. At least in the power department, his seven home runs on the season tied for second-most on the team entering Tuesday.

With their latest win, the Blue Jays have moved to 33-35 on the season. They’re still eight games back of the AL East lead, however, they would own a Wild Card spot if the season were to end. As Toronto looks to climb up the standings, they’ll look for more clutch performances form Valenzuela and everyone on their roster.
