Big Ten, SEC presidents, chancellors vote to support the Protect College Sports Act

There appears to be swift movement regarding federal legislation that would regulate college sports. New reporting shows that Big Ten and SEC chancellors have moved to approve passage of the Protect College Sports Act. It would give enforcement mechanisms to the NCAA, to further regulate NIL and other issues.

“It is official: Big Ten presidents and chancellors voted to support the Protect College Sports Act,” Yahoo Sports reporter Ross Dellenger posted to X, formerly Twitter.

The NCAA needs approval from Congress to make this legislation take effect. Senators and Congressmen from states with SEC and Big Ten schools weren’t willing to move forward until the conferences gave a seal of approval.

That approval is now given. SEC and Big Ten presidents also said yes to the current bill.

“SEC presidents have voted to approve the Protect College Sports Act. (Senator) Eric Schmitt was on the call. Remains alive to get on the Senate floor next week,” On3’s Pete Nakos reported.

There were changes made to the act to get approval from the SEC and Big Ten officials.

“Among the concessions that have been made are an additional $22.5 million pool for player retention, entities cannot acquire media rights to create a new conference and a prohibition of compensation to recruits before enrollment,” On3 reported.

The SEC and Big Ten released a joint statement, to voice their support. The bill must be passed by the U.S. Senate and U.S. House, before it goes to President Donald Trump. Trump would also have to sign the bill, for it to become law.

“The Big Ten Conference and Southeastern Conference support the Protect College Sports Act as currently drafted, following detailed and productive negotiations with Senators Cruz, Cantrell and Schmitt and their respective staffs. We appreciate the substantial work that has gone into this effort,” the conferences said.

A vote in the U.S. Senate could be coming within days.
