Ben Simmons’ godfather claims he’s shooting 3-pointers. Kings fans will believe it when they see it
The Sacramento Kings recently made headlines when it was announced they were signing former NBA All-Star Ben Simmons to a deal ahead of the new season. The move brings Simmons back to the NBA after a year away from basketball, as he hopes to prove he still has some game left in the tank.
Simmons has long been criticized for his inability, and unwillingness, to shoot the ball from the perimeter, although his godfather David Patrick says that will change this season.
“He comes to camp, he’s shooting threes in live play, doesn’t care whether they make or miss… That swagger, that confidence that he once had, is back,” he said, per the Matt & Kayla Show on Sactown Sports 1140, via Basket News.
Simmons never took many threes during his days with the Philadelphia 76ers, although he was one of the most unique players in the league at the beginning of his career, using his elite size, athleticism, and court vision to become a nightmare in transition and attacking the basket. Simmons was also one of the league’s elite perimeter defenders for several years, making three All-Star Game appearances in his career.
Unfortunately, a combination of severe back injury struggles, as well as clear mental hurdles on the court, culminating in a 2021 disaster in the playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks, ended Simmons’ 76ers tenure in ugly fashion, and he bounced around the league for a few years before eventually setting sail to become a fisherman last year.
However, now, Simmons will have another chance to prove himself on a rebuilding Kings team, where he figures to get plenty of opportunities to handle the ball and make plays.
The Kings will kick off their season on October 21 vs the Los Angeles Clippers.
