Ben Roethlisberger makes’extremely nervous’ admission on Steelers’ Drew Allar
The Pittsburgh Steelers may be entering a bold new era under Mike McCarthy. However, franchise legend Ben Roethlisberger is already sounding the alarm on one of the organization’s biggest long-term investments. During the latest episode of his “Footbahlin” podcast, Roethlisberger openly admitted that recent OTA footage of quarterback Drew Allar left him “extremely nervous.” In particular, Roethlisberger felt this when evaluating the mechanics behind the Penn State product’s development.
“Just to me, when I’m watching him do like three-step drops, that makes me incredibly nervous,” Roethlisberger said, raising eyebrows across Steeler Nation.
The concern, according to the future Hall of Famer, goes beyond simple refinement. Roethlisberger emphasized the difference between polishing technique and teaching foundational quarterback mechanics from scratch. He compared Allar’s footwork instruction to drills taught at youth football camps.
Hot damn: Big Ben says he’s “extremely nervous” about Drew Allar. Hes in disbelief that the Steelers need to teach him things quarterbacks learn in youth camps. Allar is a project that will never work. IMO. pic.twitter.com/Tdxgd34ps4

It is a revealing admission from one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in franchise history. It also hints the Steelers may view Allar as a far longer-term project than many initially expected. Fortunately for Pittsburgh, Aaron Rodgers remains firmly entrenched as the 2026 starter. That gives Allar valuable developmental runway behind an experienced veteran. Still, Roethlisberger’s comments inject a dose of realism into the excitement surrounding Allar’s elite physical traits and massive arm talent.
Few people understand the demands of playing quarterback in Pittsburgh better than Roethlisberger himself. Drafted 11th overall in 2004, “Big Ben” spent all 18 of his NFL seasons with the Steelers. He won two Super Bowls while throwing for 64,088 yards and 418 touchdowns. His physical toughness and ability to thrive under pressure helped define an era of Steelers football. That is precisely why his skepticism toward Allar’s developmental curve carries so much weight.
