Bears star Caleb Williams’ 2-word mic drop to fan asking about Madden Curse
Quarterback Caleb Williams has officially become the first member of the Chicago Bears to ever grace a Madden cover. Now, he’ll have to shake off the daunted Madden Curse.
However, Williams isn’t concerned about the superstition. When asked directly about the Madden Curse, the Bears quarterback didn’t hesitate to drop the mic, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
“Damn right,” Williams said of breaking the curse.
The Madden Curse has been in the back of fans’ minds since the 2020 season. There were a number of players who made the cover, but then went on to have disastrous seasons. Michael Vick and Shaun Alexander suffered injuries in their cover year. Peyton Hillis didn’t live up to the hype after his Madden season. The list goes on of others who have been afflicted by the curse.
However, it isn’t a foregone conclusion. Calvin Johnson was on the cover of Madden 13 before he broke the single-season receiving yard record. Tom Brady won an MVP after Madden 18 while Patrick Mahomes won a Super Bowl after Madden 2020. Just because Williams is on the cover doesn’t automatically mean his 2026 season will be a failure.
But ultimately, it’ll be up to the quarterback to prove himself. In his first year under head coach Ben Johnson, Williams threw for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He added another 388 yards and three scores on the ground.
The Bears have built their offense around helping Williams reach his full No. 1 pick potential. Chicago is fully convinced he is the quarterback that’ll lead the franchise to new heights. It’s now clear that Madden agrees. Curse be damned.
