Baker Mayfield strikes $165 million contract extension with Buccaneers right before Week 1 opener

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers preparing for the 2026 NFL season, there had been a lingering question of when the team and quarterback Baker Mayfield would sign a contract extension. As contract talks between the Buccaneers and Mayfield have been long-standing, it has ended with a new $165 million extension.

According to NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, Mayfield and Tampa Bay have agreed on a “three-year contract extension,” which gets a deal done under a week from the Week 1 opener on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Per Rapoport, the contract extension is worth $165 million, earning $55 million per year.

“ESPN sources: two-time Pro-Bowl selection Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers reached agreement today on a three-year contract extension that will prevent the quarterback from becoming a free agent after this season, per me and [Ian Rapoport],” Schefter wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Mayfield had broken off talks as camp opened, but with the regular season kicking off this week, a deal has been revisited and now struck.”

“It’s a 3-year, $165M deal for Baker Mayfield. That comes in at $55M per year,” Rapoport wrote on X.

Contract talks between Baker Mayfield and Buccaneers appeared dead

The news of Mayfield and the Buccaneers coming to an agreement on an extension could come as a shock to the football world since general manager Jason Licht said last Tuesday that contract talks were halted, via Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times.

Last season for Tampa Bay, Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards to go along with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in a year that was riddled with a myriad of injuries. The team and Mayfield himself look to replicate his 2024 season, where he recorded 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns, though he had 16 picks.

At any rate, the contract talks are done, and the Buccaneers and Mayfield are now fully focused on Week 1 against the Bengals.
