Avalanche’s Gabriel Landeskog drops truth bomb after Game 1 win vs. Kings

The Colorado Avalanche had the best regular-season record of any team in the National Hockey League, but now that the playoffs have gotten underway, that’s ancient history. The Avs have designs on running through the Western Conference playoffs and getting a chance to play for the Stanley Cup in a couple of months when they face the Eastern Conference representatives.

Veteran Gabriel Landeskog knows what the battle is all about. He was a part of the Avs when they won the Stanley Cup at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, and he had to battle a series of major injuries before he finally returned near the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. Landeskog is clearly one of the team’s emotional leaders, and he spoke of the task ahead of the Avs as they compete in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Avalanche started off on the right foot in their first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings. They earned a 2-1 victory in the series opener, but Landeskog is not taking anything for granted. He knows that victory can turn into defeat in an instant and the reverse is also true.

“This is what it’s all about,” Landeskog said. “There’s nothing better than playoff hockey. The margins are so thin and the games can often go either way.”

The Avs and Kings engaged in a strong defensive game that was scoreless until deep into the second period. Artturi Lehkonen opened the scoring for the Avalanche and Logan O’Connor stretched the lead to 2-0. Artemi Panari scored for the Kings late in the third period, but they could not notch the tying goal.

The Avs will host the Kings in Game 2 Tuesday night.
