Atletico Madrid vs Inter predictions

Having done so well to reach the Champions League final last season, Inter crumbled in the face of Paris Saint-Germain at the Allianz Arena.

PSG turned on the style in the tournament showpiece, demolishing Inter in one of the most one-sided finals of all time. The French outfit’s 5-0 victory will live long in the memory of their supporters, while Inter fans tried to wipe it from theirs immediately.

The Nerazzurri were utterly outclassed in Munich, but they had exceeded expectations by reaching the final. 

Moreover, it was the second-time in three years that they had finished as runners-up. In the 2023 final, Simone Inzaghi’s side gave a much better account of themselves in a 1-0 loss to Manchester City. But after the shellacking by PSG, Inzaghi decided he had taken Inter as far as he could.

Christian Chivu was chosen as his replacement. A former Inter player who went on to coach the Under-14s, Under-17s, Under-18s and Under-19s, his managerial experience at senior level amounted to a few months at the helm of Parma.

Still, Chivu’s Inter have made a fine start to their Champions League campaign. With four wins out of four, they are one of only three teams boasting a 100 percent record at the midway point of the league phase (Bayern Munich and Arsenal are the other two).

It must be acknowledged that the fixture list has been kind to Inter, who have faced Ajax, Slavia Prague, Union Saint-Gilloise and Kairat up to now. All four of those sides are in the bottom nine of the standings as things stand.

You can only beat what is in front of you, though, and Inter have done that with aplomb. In doing so, they have put themselves in a strong position to finish in the top eight and advance automatically to the round of 16.

Atletico Madrid still have work to do in that regard. They have won two and lost two up to now, with their defeats coming at the hands of Liverpool and Arsenal.

Atletico have returned to form in recent weeks, though, and they will draw confidence from having the best home record in the league phase.

In fact, Atletico have won 11 of their last 12 Champions League matches at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid and Inter will lock horns in an intriguing Champions League contest on Wednesday.

Atletico Madrid can edge it

Inter’s position in the table is impressive, but the calibre of their opponents must be taken into account. No one really thinks Chivu’s charges are the third-best team in Europe at the moment.

The Nerazzurri will be desperate to bounce back from defeat by rivals Milan on Sunday, but Atletico Madrid have the bit between their teeth at the moment. 

Diego Simeone’s side have won five matches in a row in all competitions, as well as nine of their last 11.

In the process Atletico have moved within four points of top spot in La Liga, and they will now be looking to get closer to the top eight in the Champions League.

Atletico are in excellent form and they are tough to beat at home, so go with the Spanish side in this one.

Goals on the low side

Inter have had no trouble introducing the ball to the net in the Champions League.

Chivu’s men have scored 11 goals, with Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Barcelona the only teams with better attacking records.

Again, though, the defences Inter have faced are not in the class of Atletico Madrid’s. The stereotype of Atletico being defensive masters is a little outdated, but they still know how to shut games down when they want to.

Simeone will probably take that sort of approach on Wednesday, so do not expect a high-scoring encounter.

Alvarez to strike for hosts

Julian Alvarez has been linked with a transfer away from Atletico Madrid of late, and the ambitious Argentinian will probably move on at some point.

For now, though, he remains an Atletico player and he will be key to their ambitions this season.

Alvarez has scored nine goals in 16 games in 2025/26, including two in three in the Champions League.

Whether he is partnered up top by Alexander Sorloth, Antoine Griezmann or Alex Baena, Alvarez will be Atletico’s primary threat against Inter.
