Astros rumors: Yordan Alvarez trade idea gets reality check from MLB insider

As the Houston Astros have been struggling in the 2026 season, the team could end up being sellers when it comes to the trade deadline, with the conversation now being whether the ball club would deal star Yordan Alvarez. On top of Astros shortstop Carlos Correa missing the season with an injury, the team could cut its losses on this season, though this MLB insider discusses the possibility of trading Alvarez.

Speaking on “Foul Territory,” Rosenthal would be asked if it’s possible for Houston to end up trading Alvarez amidst a disappointing season for the team as a whole. However, Rosenthal can’t see a world where the team ends up dealing Alvarez away, though he sees them most likely trading players like Christian Walker or Isaac Paredes if the team feels they’re out of contention.

“I can’t imagine them trading Yordan Alvarez. He is one of their centerpieces. I do expect that at the deadline, if they are unable to recover, then you’ll see Christian Walker or Isaac Paredes go. And we’ve been talking about those guys, and one of them getting traded for quite some time now,” Rosenthal said.

“It hasn’t happened, and yes, I know they’re depleted, but at the deadline, if they’re out of it, and it’s going to be difficult to be out of it in the American League, as we’ve seen, then perhaps they make the move then,” Rosenthal continued.

Yordan Alvarez has been a huge bright spot for the Astros 

If there has been a bright spot to the Astros this season, it has been the play of Alvarez, who currently records a .319 batting average to go along with 12 home runs and 27 RBIs with an OPS of 1.061. It would be hard to sell to the fans trading Alvarez unless Houston wants to do a full-blown rebuild, but despite the struggles, the team isn’t far off the top of the AL West.

At any rate, it remains to be seen if the Astros trade Alvarez as the team has a 15-23 record, third in the division, but still four games back of the Athletics at first.
