Astros’ Jose Altuve takes big step in injury rehab amid Rangers series
The Houston Astros have struggled mightily out of the gate, currently holding 24-31 record. What hasn’t helped is the litany of injuries across the roster.
Amongst the Astros players currently on the injured list is Jose Altuve, who is battling an oblique strain. On Tuesday though, the second baseman took a giant leap towards making his return, via Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
“Jose Altuve took 30 swings yesterday in Florida, and fielded ground balls today,” McTaggart wrote.
There is still no direct timetable for Altuve to return. The Astros will likely want to see him ramp up his baseball activities before making any firm decisions. The fact he was able to both swing and play the field on Tuesday is a sign of his steady recovery. Houston will be keeping a close eye on Altuve as he ramps of that rehab process.
Like many Astros hitters, the 2026 season hasn’t been particularly kind to the second baseman. Over 42 games, Altuve is hitting .245 with four home runs, 12 RBIs and a stolen base. Perhaps his oblique strain played a role in his diminished numbers.
Still, Houston is well aware of what Altuve brings to the table. He has won two World Series with the franchise while taking home an MVP award and nine All-Star nominations. His 16 years with the Astros has resulted in a .302 batting average, 259 home runs, 901 RBIs and 326 stolen bases.
With the Astros trying to climb their way back into playoff contention, they would gladly take Altuve’s bat back in the lineup. But the first order of business is ensuring the second baseman is fully healthy.
