Aston Villa record-breaker Brian Madjo set for period on sidelines through injury

Aston Villa striker Brian Madjo is expected to miss the start of the Premier League season after picking up an injury.

Madjo, who has been a breakout star this pre-season, suffered a knock after Villa‘s UEFA Super Cup loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 17-year-old scored his club’s only goal in that game against French giants PSG on what was his competitive debut.

But now he’s suffered a cruel blow, just a week before the Premier League campaign gets going.

How long will Madjo be out?

According to The Athletic, Madjo is set to be sidelined until at least September.

If that is the case, he will miss Aston Villa’s opening game against Brighton, as well as a clash against Arsenal.

The forward could also be sat out for matches against newly-promoted Hull City and Nottingham Forest, as well as Tottenham on September 19.

It is a nightmare scenario for Unai Emery, who would have planned to use Madjo in his side’s opening fixtures this term.

As mentioned, the teenager has starred in pre-season, scoring once and making a huge impact in his three appearances.

His goal against PSG that levelled the tie at the time in the Super Cup saw him break a record in the special match.

He became the youngest ever scorer in the UEFA game that sees the Champions League and Europa League winners face off.

Madjo would have hoped to take some of his momentum into his maiden Premier League season, but he will now be out.

Who else is injured for Aston Villa?

Aston Villa will be very disappointed to not have Madjo available.

Ollie Watkins is sure to start now, but Tammy Abraham is Emery’s only other option up front heading into the campaign.

And when it comes to injuries, Villa have another one to worry about alongside the youngster, who officially joined this summer.

Fellow new signing Joao Gomes has also been ruled out.

Similar to Madjo, after the loss to PSG, Gomes picked up an injury and he is set to be sidelined for the next two to four weeks.

Recovery timelines are yet to be fully determined, but both players are certainly going to miss the start of the season.

Emery has already been without Amadou Onana, who suffered an ACL injury while playing at the World Cup for Belgium.
