Arkansas HC John Calipari scores huge recruiting win with 6-foot-11 Russian big man

A successful visit to Fayetteville paid off for Arkansas, as Russian center Ilia Frolov announced his commitment to John Calipari and the Razorbacks on Thursday for the 2026-27 season.

Frolov, 18, is a 6-foot-11, 225-pound center and a member of the Russian national team. Before choosing Arkansas, he also drew interest from programs including Penn State, NC State, and BYU. He recently stepped away from national team duties to pursue a college basketball career in the United States.

The highly regarded prospect spent the past several seasons in Real Madrid’s development system and most recently competed in Spain’s Under-22 Liga U competition. During the 2025-26 season, Frolov averaged 13.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.1 steals in 19 games while shooting 52.8% from the field, 36.1% from three-point range, and 84.6% from the free-throw line.

Frolov’s commitment bolsters the Razorbacks frontcourt that includes Paulo Semedo, Maper Maker, and Miikka Muurinen. His arrival follows a recruiting process in which Arkansas coaches evaluated him in person during his visit, reviewing updated measurements, physical development, and on-court performance through workouts, drills, and scrimmages. The visit also helped address eligibility-related paperwork required for international prospects.

The Russian center becomes part of the Razorbacks’ top-ranked 2026 recruiting class, joining five-star guards Jordan Smith Jr. (No. 3 nationally) and Abdou Toure (No. 12 nationally), along with four-star prospects Miikka Muurinen (No. 18) and JJ Andrews (No. 19).

Frolov’s addition gives Calipari another international prospect with professional-development experience as Arkansas continues building one of the nation’s most talented rosters for the upcoming season.
