Amanda Serrano admits she ‘has to break’ iconic knockout record held by boxing legend

Amanda Serrano plans to level Christie Martin’s historic knockout record in her next fight.

And the unified featherweight champion doesn’t want to stop there.

Serrano faces Cheyenne Hanson in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday night as part of a double main event card promoted by Jake Paul‘s Most Valuable Promotions.

Also on the bill, former UFC champion Holly Holm looks to avenge her defeat to WBA lightweight champion Stephanie Han in a rematch.

Serrano got back to winning ways in her last fight by outpointing Reina Tellez, fresh off an iconic trilogy with Irish great Katie Taylor.

She boasts a remarkable 48-4-1 record, scoring 31 KOs across her 17-year trailblazing career.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 37-year-old from Puerto Rico shed light on what she still wants to achieve during her limited time in the sweet science.

Serrano targeting Martin’s KO record

“It definitely is [an ambition],” she said of breaking Martin’s record of 32 KOs.

Martin, who fought 59 times between 1989 and 2012, has one of the most incredible stories in the history of sport.

‘The Coalminer’s Daughter’ went to battle with the likes of Laila Ali, Muhammad Ali‘s daughter, and her story to boxing’s summit hit Hollywood last year with Sydney Sweeney playing her in a hard-hitting biopic.

Serrano continued: “I’m so close – I have to break it – I can feel it in my bones. But first we have to tie it Saturday night.”

On her German opponent, she added: “She’s a come-forward fighter, but those are the fights I like.

“I’m at featherweight where I feel my best and I feel my strongest. I’m excited to put on a showcase in front of my El Paso fans.”

Paul’s partner and co-owner of MVP Nakisa Bidarian highlighted how badly Serrano wants to break Martin’s record.

“I think her number one goal is to tie and break Christie Martin’s knockout record,” Bidarian said.

“If she gets a knockout this weekend, she ties it. Gets one more, she breaks it, most knockouts in history by a female fighter.”

Serrano vs Hanson is part of a stacked weekend of boxing, with Briton Adam Azim in action, as well as unified light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

Former UFC title challenger Darren Till also takes the gloves off for the first time for his BKFC debut against Aaron Chalmers on Saturday night.
