The Boston Red Sox had a huge overhaul during the weekend, firing manager Alex Cora and five members of the staff as the team had gotten off to a rough start. Along with Cora, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, hitting coach Peter Fatse, third-base coach Kyle Hudson, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin were let go.

Later on, the Red Sox announced that Jason Varitek had been fired as well, though it was initially reported by the team that he was being reassigned within the organization.

Cora went on social media to post a picture of all the coaches heading on a plane, and everyone seemed to have smiles on their faces. Then there was Varitek, who was seen giving a thumbs down, probably insinuating he wasn’t a fan of the recent moves.

When multiple reporters reached out to Cora following the firing, he let them know that he was in a good place. As for Varitek, it was said that he took the news hard, even though he’s supposed to have a new role with the team that will be announced at a later date.

Red Sox owner John Henry wrote a statement following the firings and thanked all the coaches for what they meant to the organization.

“I want to thank Alex, our coaches, and their families for everything they have given to this organization. They have been part of this club in a way that goes beyond the field, and they will always have our respect and gratitude,” Henry wrote.

As of now, Chad Tracy will be the interim coach, and it’s uncertain if they’ll hire a new coach during the season.
