Albert Pujols focused on the Blue Jays star’s hands and bat path.

“I did it myself too. When I see that tip of the bat, that means that I’m taking my hands too far back. So that was a trigger for me, you know,” Pujols said. He then pointed to the separation the Blue Jays star needs before launch.

“So I think from hand, he just need to just have that little separation, you know. He has his back here, and then he come here, and then leg kick. That’s the separation he needs to have here, so he can be ready to hit, you know, from that position.”

Guerrero is still producing a .276/.358/.360 slash line with four home runs and 34 RBI, but the power has not matched his usual standard. Last season, he hit 23 home runs and posted a 4.6 WAR. This year, his 0.7 WAR makes that gap feel loud for the Blue Jays’ five-time All-Star.

Pujols explained that extra bat wrap can make the Blue Jays slugger’s swing too long against 95 or 96 mph fastballs, where hitters have less than a second to react. The key fix is better separation, keeping the bat ready and allowing Guerrero to attack the right pitch.
