Alabama beats out Ohio State, LSU, Michigan for 2027 4-star RB

Alabama football started Sunday by losing a cornerback commit to rival Auburn. But head coach Kalen DeBoer and company made up for it right away: Landing four-star running back Nigel Newkirk and beating Ohio State, LSU and Michigan for him.

The 2027 standout from Gainesville, Florida confirmed the commitment decision via Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals. He boasted “I’ve been an elephant” in his message.

DeBoer lands a massive College Football Recruiting win here. Not just limited to beating the likes of the Buckeyes, Wolverines and rival Tigers either. Newkirk arrives to Tuscaloosa as the nation’s No. 6 running back. ‘Bama running backs coach Robert Gillespie assisted DeBoer in landing this commitment out of Gainesville High.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder told Chad Simmons of On3/Rivals that Alabama recruited him the hardest out of all the schools pursuing him.

“They’ve always been in front,” Newkirk said. “Alabama has always been up there. They have always shown love, they have always made me feel wanted, and my visits there were always great.”

Newkirk added how he developed a “tight” bond with Gillespie. He hands ‘Bama a true north-south runner who pounds linebackers, defensive linemen with his low pad level.

Alabama secured its second four-star win in a span of three weeks. The Crimson Tide lured linebacker Kenneth Simon II back on May 11. Even beating out Southeastern Conference rivals Georgia and Ole Miss.

DeBoer addressed the 2028 class too in May: Reeling in three-star Charles Scott from Richmond, Virginia. Scott turned down Georgia as well, but also local option Virginia Tech who have James Franklin leading them now.
