49ers add to DB room with ex-Giants 1st round cornerback

The San Francisco 49ers produced scrappers in their joint practice with the Tennessee Titans Wednesday. Leading into two players getting banned. But now general manager John Lynch lured back a familiar face: Ex-New York Giants cornerback Eli Apple.

Lynch and the 49ers have signed Apple to a one-year deal, per San Francisco insider for The Athletic Matt Barrows Wednesday. And the veteran cornerback isn’t the only signing here, with SF adding running back Zamir White and defensive lineman Xavier Thomas.

But Apple earns one more crack with the 49ers. He previously joined the team last season and played in two games. The franchise and head coach Kyle Shanahan brought in Apple more for depth purposes. He still delivered one solo tackle in limited duty.

Apple has delivered a rather star-crossed NFL career. Despite landing high in his class with the Giants at No. 10 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. The former Ohio State star defender picked off just one pass across two seasons before enduring a midseason 2018 trade with the New Orleans Saints. Apple went on to pick off two passes in his new surroundings.

He stuck around the Bayou for one more season before joining the NFC South rival Carolina Panthers. But then Apple earned his first Super Bowl taste two seasons later with the Cincinnati Bengals, winning the AFC alongside quarterback Joe Burrow, wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and company. Apple broke up 10 passes that season in what became his best full-season total there.

San Francisco now rises as the fourth team Apple will spend one more season with. The 31-year-old has played for seven different franchises.
